Father Damien

Robert Louis Stevenson's wonderful defence of Father Damien of Molokai, SS.CC., a Belgian missionary priest who many people consider a saint and who, quite literally, spent his life amongst the lepers of Hawaii during the second half of the nineteenth century.

Robert Louis Stevenson, himself a Protestant, visited Fr. Damien's mission field of Molokai shortly after the good priest's death, and jumped in eagerly to publicly defend the priest's good name and deeds from slanderous poison put abroad by a Presbyterian doctor.
